April showers

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Ah…pretty view on my morning commute.

Ooh. Bummer. Nasty commute home in the rain! And not-so-pretty view of the same monument (on right behind trees).

I hate a late commute home, and a late commute in the rain just has to be the worst. As I’ve said for a long time, DC drivers start having accidents when [...]

Pretty in pink

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Between the cold and the tourists, I didn’t manage to spend as much time down at the Tidal Basin as last year. Since I got more of the cliche shots then, I kinda took a low-key approach and did more along the river and down by Hains Pt. Here’s a PDF map of where the [...]

And now for something different

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

A gloomy morning, but the cherry blossoms are definitely close to peaking.
And if I say so, not a bad shot given I just pulled my PowerShot out of my pocketbook and rolled down my car window while waiting for the light at 15th and Independence!

Cat tormenters

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

A family of mourning doves has been making regular appearances on my balcony. I’m not sure what’s attractive about last year’s dead planter foliage, but this is the second time I’ve seen a bird here.
I took the photo at right this morning, thinking it was just the one bird, when one of my cats did [...]

YAFF!

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

I just noticed yet another Flickr function!
I’ve known for a while that groups and people have RSS feeds, but I just now noticed that they also provide feeds of recent photos from your contact list. You can choose either all your contacts or just your friends and family.
Sweet!

Cherry Blossoms 2007

Friday, March 30th, 2007

I left for work an hour early so I could stop by and take some shots. This is my fave from today. See all the rest on Flickr.

Flickr collections

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Cool! When did Flickr add collections? I missed that one.
Anyways, another tool to get you to sign up for their services, since this is only useful for people with multiple sets — and sets are limited for the free service.
The image at right is the mosaic I created for my DC Highlights collection of local [...]

A real snow day

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Despite a day and a half of predictions of sleet/rain/freezing rain, the rain snow line was south of DC, and we had quite the morning snow…easily four inches where I am.
Alas, that meant my sister canceled my nieces’ birthday party (they turned 12), but they are happy…I’m sure Fairfax County will reward them with yet [...]

What a great shot!

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Kathleen was enjoying today’s unseasonable weather as well. But check out this awesome shot she got!

Wow!

Check out Phil Plait’s Top Ten Astronomy Images of 2006.

I love Ritz Pics!

Friday, December 1st, 2006

Considering I’ve been doing digital photography for years (the earliest I have on this laptop is from 2002), I can’t believe I haven’t experimented with printing services before this. I used to print my own, but actually haven’t hooked up my printer since moving three years ago. And frankly, I didn’t miss the printing.
At the [...]

Bonus day

Monday, October 9th, 2006

Because of a bit of a serendipity trifecta (boss out this week, only one meeting to reschedule, one of the last nice days of the season), I took an unscheduled vacation day.
Aside from other mundane things, one job was to go thru the change I had in my change basket, and take some of [...]

George Washington Memorial Parkway

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

Until my recent fascination with photography and Flickr, the GW Parkway was generally just the way I got to and from work and parts north (typically heading home to Pittsburgh) and south (usually the airport).
But the GW Parkway is really the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and it includes a lot of off-the-beaten-path memorials in addition [...]

The Flickr addiction is getting serious!

Saturday, October 7th, 2006

Uh oh. I’m in big trouble. I’ve just learned how to find out whether or not any of your photos are in Flickr’s Explore.
I don’t have the 17 photos there that Mike Lee does, but given how awesome a photographer he is, the fact I’m there at all (I have two) is like crack…seriously!
BTW, the [...]

More Flickr fun

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Here’s a pic I took on my drive home today:

I made this slightly out of the way trip so that I could submit an entry to A Day On Earth 9/29, which I came across in one of my Flickr feeds.
The curious thing about this to me is that I’m pretty skeptical about this whole [...]

The problem with sunrises…

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

…is that they happen wicked early!
But I picked up a new tripod yesterday to use in my photography class, and even though this wasn’t a great sunset, it was still good practice.
See it slightly larger on Flickr.
