Vivisimo
Per Sylvie's suggestion, I'm going to play around with Vivisimo and see whether its clustering technology is useful. PC Magazine had good things to say, as did SearchEngineWatch.com.
A very brief exploration of the term "information design" found the clusters a bit frustrating to navigate, but I liked the preview links to the right of the returned pages.
