Life’s a beach

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Today’s the first full day at Nags Head with my extended family (my dad, his wife, and assorted kids and grandkids). The drive down was amazingly easy for a weekend, and after a morning of storms, the early evening is just beautiful.
Tonight’s highlight was amazing…we were serenaded by a young guy playing bagpipes as he [...]

Martina!

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Oh rats. I picked a really, really bad day to have left the camera at home. And my colleagues who took lots of photos at the rally yesterday apparently weren’t at the session this AM with Martina Navratilova. Bummer, because…
She rocks!!
Actually, it was very interesting. She prepared some remarks for the crowd on the subject [...]

JetBlue’s PR nightmare

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

See Daily Kos for the backstory if you missed it.
BTW, I love the payoff at the end of the video: Jet Blue…only room for the right wing.

Cheap date…not!

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Ah, it used to be that a weekend date with my twin nieces could be had on the cheap. Off to the park, to Mickey Donalds for some fries and a drink, or maybe some time at the mall.
No more!
Today’s date (seeing the latest Harry Potter — first time for me, third time for them) [...]

Work gossip

Monday, July 16th, 2007

So, heard an interesting tidbit as I left work today. The president of the subsidiary where I used to work is leaving for greener pastures.
On the one hand, I must admit to being surprised. The rumor mill had her as a likely candidate for the CEO job of the parent one of these days. [...]

Schmap

Friday, July 13th, 2007

I wasn’t aware of the Schmap travel guides, but when I went to upload one of the cat photos to Flickr just now, I noticed that Schmap wants to use two of my photos in the next edition of their DC guide:

I get the Clara Barton photo, but think some of my other Fletcher’s Cove [...]

Be still my beating heart!!!

Friday, July 13th, 2007

I heart Google. I occasionally worry that they may well be the “greatest threat to privacy ever known” (Mother Jones), but mostly, they keep seducing me.
Look at what I just found…a Google map (already one of my favorite things), now overlaid with two of my favorite map hacks — the DCist Metro Map and a [...]

Intolerance

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

Kathleen recently riffed on how the Pope is a nut-job. And a while back, a loser CNN talking head thinks it is okay to ask a newly elected US Congressman (also a Muslim) to prove he’s not working with “our” enemies.
Now there’s this…”a Hindu delivered the morning invocation in the Senate chamber — only to [...]

Made me laugh

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

A colleague emailed the following earlier today:

So, how ironic is it that Microsoft Word does not acknowledge or auto-fix the word luddite?

I thought it might be a case thing, but no, Luddite isn’t recognized either.

Good question!

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

Kevin Drum asks:

I wonder how many Americans understand that you can’t pass legislation in America with 50% of the votes in Congress? How many of them understand that, outside of budget resolutions, you need 60 votes in the Senate? That a filibuster isn’t a matter of Jimmy Stewart talking himself ragged for hours on [...]

Girlyman

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

Oh happy day! Girlyman’s latest CD, Joyful Sign, just showed up from Amazon. The band describes their music as “delicious acoustic harmony-driven gender pop” (emphasis, IMO, on really delicious harmony).
I recommend checking out You Were the Lie … awesome!

Web 2.0 for info designers

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

Okay, as an old fart, I’m marginally into Web 2.0 stuff. Not so much the networking stuff (MySpace, LinkedIn, etc), but I have been blogging (on and off) since 2001, I love Flickr, and I have even uploaded a few of my own YouTube videos.
But I was recently turned on to Slideshare, and am just [...]

Friday cat blogging

Friday, July 6th, 2007

It’s been a while, so thought I’d upload a recent cat pic. BTW, in the “things that make you go huh?” category, I just caught the tail end of Tucker waiting for Hardball to start, and their news guy mentioned today was W’s birthday. He mentioned some other notable birthdays today, including Sylvester Stallone, “of [...]

Learn something new

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Oops. Meant to post this yesterday. But it is deserted here at work, so will indulge in a little on-the-job blogging before leaving early!
Hmmm. Apparently I’m either not listening or don’t have a nuance for language. According to John Aravosis, the word “homosexual” is “degrading and offensive and archaic.”
I’ve written about this before, and some [...]

Brass balls

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

From Firedoglake:
President Bush, once again throwing the rule of law out in the trash to cater to his rabid base, has commuted Scooter Libby’s prison sentence. … The President has an absolute right to do this. But by commuting the sentence of his former Presidential advisor and the former Number 2 to Dick Cheney [...]
